Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) chief Anwar Nasution says there is a serious problem with the Visa-on-Arrival (VoA) system, which needs to be addressed.
“There has been a serious mistake in the implementation of the system,” Anwar told Antara nes agency after signing an agreement with the Justice and Human Rights Ministry on improving the latter’s financial reports here on Friday.
Anwar made the statement following the recent discovery of violations in the implementation of the VoA system at Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport.
BPK auditors had discovered that users of the VoA system at the airport between Oct. 2008 and May 2009 had been made to pay an illegal levy that had caused the state financial losses of some Rp 3 billion.
The official tariff for VoA for stays of less than a week was US$10, and for stays of more than a week US$25, per person. In practice, however, Ngurah Rai immigration officers had charged applicants US$25 for VoA for stays of less than a week.
It is believed this had also been happening at other international entry points around the country.
