FOR EDUCATION: Chin (second left) hands over a RM600 educational aid from Bakti to Liren Hurai of Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang. Accompanying her is her teacher. Looking on at left is Ting.
SUPP president Datuk Seri Peter Chin said the list of names had been sent on April 30 to the secretary-general of the Barisan Nasional (BN) in Kuala Lumpur.
“SUPP has submitted the proposed names of candidates, but I can’t disclose it. We have received directive from BN that now is not the time to announce the candidates,” he said.
Chin who is Miri MP and Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water told reporters this in Miri yesterday after presenting on behalf of his wife Datin Seri Ruby, bursaries from the Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) to nine students.
Also present was his political secretary, Datuk Sebastian Ting.
He pointed out that all those listed were considered winnable candidates. However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will make the final decision on the candidates for all BN component parties.
“PM has his own way of analysing and surveying for winnable candidates.”
“Of course, every aspect is taken into consideration including appearance. We can’t afford to put posters of candidates having a sour face. That is why we even have image remaking,” Chin added.
As to why some state’s BN component parties including SUPP recently announced the names of their candidates, Chin said “we, as well as SPDP, only announced the prospective candidates, not the final list endorsed by PM.”
Chin had recently announced that the SUPP Central Working Committee had endorsed SUPP deputy president Datuk Richard Riot to stand in Serian, deputy secretary-general II Ding Kuong Hiing in Sarikei and Youth chief Tan Kai in Bandar Kuching in the coming 13th general election.
Tan Kai is a new face while Riot and Ding are MPs of Serian and Sarikei respectively.
However, little was mentioned of other constituencies allocated to SUPP, namely Sibu, Lanang, Stampin and Miri.
SUPP, which is the oldest political party in Sarawak, won six out of seven parliamentary constituencies in the 12th general election held in 2008.
The party is seen to be facing a tough battle in the 13th general election following their poor performance in the last state election in 2011 where they lost 13 out of 19 seats contested.
