The Promise: The Families of Sandy Hook and the Long Road to Gun Safety
Friends and Colleagues –
In The Promise: The Families of Sandy Hook and the Long Road to Gun Safety, Matt Bennett tells the story of Sandy Hook Promise, the gun safety advocacy organization formed by the victims’ families in Newtown, Connecticut. He offers an in-depth look at the difficulty in challenging one of the most sophisticated special interest groups in modern history and the perseverance by a uniquely dedicated team of advocates.
Matt and I also recorded a video conversation about his piece, which is featured in the essay itself. You can read the essay and watch the video here:
Matt Bennett serves as Senior Vice President for Public Affairs and co-founder at Third Way, the D.C.-based think tank that has worked with Sandy Hook Promise on behalf of sensible gun safety laws in the wake of their personal tragedies.
I think you'll find both his essay and his comments enlightening and inspiring, and hope you can join the conversation about The Promise with me on Twitter using the hashtag #ThePromise.
Sincerely,
Senior Fellow, Governance Studies at Brookings

Dear all,
Ridho Reinanda, researcher in the Elite Network Shifts project (http://www.kitlv.nl/home/ Projects?id=25), has opened up another historical news archive with his Lucene search engine. It is John MacDougall's apakabar news service, the first Indonesian online news service of the internet era, with tens of 1000s of articles dating between 1990 and 2002:
Try the ngram viewer ('document histogram'). Putting "*" into the search box yields a graph of the number of articles per year.
The others are these:
http://zookma.science.uva.nl/ ENS/kb_search/ - Royal Netherlands Library - digitised Dutch newspapers, including some published in Indonesia.
http://zookma.science.uva.nl/ ENS/islands_search/ - 'spidered' Indonesian newspapers from around the archipelago post New Order
http://zookma.science.uva.nl/ ENS/joyo_search/ - Joyo English language news service.
The search interface is experimental, 'as is', without warranty. For example, there seem to be some connectivity issues for users far from Amsterdam.
Please read the help page to learn how to exploit its full potential (including proximity searching).
Feel free to pass this on.
